THE

LEGACY

ASSESMENT

As we work with you to create a plan that accomplishes all of your objectives, we consider three interrelated things:

Preserving & Growing Your Financial Wealth. This element provides fi nancial security for you and for the people and causes that are important to you.

Your Estate Plan. Your estate plan protects your fi nancial assets during your lifetime and directs how they will pass when you are gone. A proper plan will protect those assets from the major risks that can destroy them—probate court, taxes, divorce, lawsuits and fi nancial immaturity.

Preserving & Sharing Your Non-Financial Wealth. This is the part of your plan that protects the values, stories, traditions and life lessons that matter and assists you in passing them on to younger generation family members in ways that will empower them to live happier and more fulfi lled lives.

These three elements are represented by this pyramid

THE LEGACY MODEL

THE LEGACY MODEL

The Legacy Planning Model is based on a concept derived from the famous pyramid created by psychologist Abraham Maslow. In his model, he proposed the idea that basic needs—such as food and shelter—must be addressed before we can focus on loftier intellectual or spiritual needs.

Inspired by Maslow’s model of human behavior, we encourage our clients to fi rst make certain they have a basic fi nancial plan in place to provide the fi nancial security they need for themselves and the people who are important to them. At the same time, we encourage them to protect their fi nancial legacy with a well-designed estate plan. When that has been accomplished, we then encourage our clients to consider the values, stories and traditions that are important to them and pro-actively work to make certain those values continue to be an empowering infl uence in the lives of younger generation family members.

“What you leave behind is not what is engraved

in stone monuments, but what is

woven into the lives of others.”

- Pericles, General of Athens

The inheritance you leave has an impact on the heirs who receive it. An inheritance can provide financial security for your heirs, pay for education and allow your benefi ciaries the freedom to live a better life. But it also has a dark side. For some, a financial inheritance can destroy work-ethic and enable drug or alcohol addictions. Is this something you would like to explore? If “yes” or “not sure,” You’ll see some related questions —feel free to respond if they apply.

Values, wisdom and life lessons. We learn from our experiences—our successful experiences as well as our failures. We also learn from the experiences of others close to us. The values we consider important are often derived from those life experiences. When properly shared, the wisdom gleaned from those experiences can be useful to younger generation family members.
